Xpress Restore® BMR

Bare Metal Recovery Supporting Dissimilar Hardware

Xpress Restore Bare Metal Recovery (XR-BMR) is an add-on component of the Xpress Restore suite of Next-Generation Data Protection solutions, and provides instant recovery and access to applications and data following a complete, catastrophic server failure. You can easily recover entire systems to a comparable server, to a new server with different hardware, or to a Virtual Machine (VMware® or Microsoft Virtual Server®).

Coupling BMR with Xpress Restore opens a wide range of capabilities to increase application availability and reduce the costs of systems and data management. Once your data is protected and stored in the standard Xpress Restore repository, you can perform the following functions with XR-BMR:

  • Provide access to applications and data within a few minutes of a catastrophic server failure. With FilesX unique Virtual Recovery™ technology, data volumes are made available immediately upon the initiation of a recovery while the data is restored from the Xpress Restore repository in the background.
  • Recover on a similar server, to a completely different server, or to a Virtual Machine to keep the operation running while a replacement system is procured.
  • When using Xpress Restore in remote / branch offices (ROBO), Bare Metal Recovery can be performed in the local office, or in a central disaster recovery site (see Xpress Restore DR). This unique capability is essential for continuing business operations following a complete site failure (fire, flood, hurricane, power outage, etc.).
  • Create new systems from any previous known-good, application-consistent recovery point (point-in-time rollback) to go back to a time before the disaster.
  • XR-BMR is the perfect tool for performing migrations to new hardware platforms.

Centralized Bare Metal Restore - High Availability On-Demand

Using most high availability solutions, such as replication or mirroring, you are required to keep two of everything - one production and one for failover. Providing high availability capabilities for many remote applications gets prohibitively expensive, especially when the failover hardware needs to be identical to the production hardware.

FilesX has a much better solution: High Availability On-Demand. Our research shows that it is highly unlikely that organizations with globally-distributed offices will experience simultaneous outages in more than a small percentage of those locations; disasters tend to be fairly localized. Therefore, it would be extremely cost-effective to only maintain enough standby systems to cover from the worst-case scenarios.

Let's say each of your 20 offices has 3 to 5 servers and you determine it's unlikely that more than 2 offices could be down at the same time. Therefore, you only need a maximum of 10 standby servers (or Virtual Machines) to provide a platform for On-Demand Bare Metal Recovery using the data in the centralized Xpress Restore DR repository.

In the diagram above, a single server is lost in one of your remote offices, and instantly restored to a standby server in the data center. From there, it can be accessed by remote staff or shipped to the remote office for re-deployment. When an entire office is impacted, all the servers from that office can be restored simultaneously.
