Central Vaulting

When protecting the data in remote or branch offices, there are two primary recovery scenarios that need to be addressed: local recovery from a user, application or system failure; and remote recovery from a disaster such as a fire or flood or worse, where the locally stored backup data is not available.

To satisfy the disaster recovery scenario, organizations need to have a program for keeping a usable copy of their remote data in a location that is sufficiently distant from the remote office. An excellent practice for large organizations is to centralize and consolidate these backup data sets into their core data center, where they can leverage their enterprise-class IT personnel, systems and processes.

(The common practice of physically sending backup tapes to an off-site vaulting facility has been shown to introduce security and data loss risks, as does any data protection process that involves manual operations.)
